Grain Storage

Preserve quality from harvest to market

Grain storage is the engineered practice of keeping harvested grain safe from insects, rodents, moisture and mould until it reaches the market or the mill. In Kenya and East Africa, up to 30% of harvested grain is lost after harvest — a loss that hermetic, aerated and monitored storage can virtually eliminate.

Storage solutions we deliver

  • Kolman Hermetic Bags. Multi-layer airtight bags that starve insects of oxygen — the simplest way to store maize, beans, rice and pulses without chemicals.
  • Kolman Cocoons. Flexible sealed cocoons from 5 to 300 tons for temporary or long-term bulk storage anywhere — no permanent structure required.
  • Warehouse & Bulk Storage. Engineered warehouses, flat stores and silos with aeration and fumigation-free management for cooperatives, traders and processors.
  • Warehouse Aeration & Consultancy. Aeration design, retrofits and storage management consultancy to keep grain cool, dry and stable throughout the storage season.

Why proper storage matters

  • Cuts post-harvest losses from insects, rodents and mould by up to 98%
  • Chemical-free preservation — hermetic and controlled-atmosphere storage
  • Preserves germination, weight and market grade for months
  • Enables farmers to hold grain and sell when prices are best
  • Scales from 50 kg bags to 5,000-ton bulk silos
  • Protects strategic reserves for cooperatives, millers and governments

Grain Monitoring

Know what's happening inside every silo — in real time

Automated grain monitoring uses in-mass sensors and wireless data logging to track the conditions that decide whether stored grain stays sound or spoils. Instead of waiting for damage to become visible, operators get early warning, act sooner and preserve both weight and quality.

What we monitor

  • Temperature. Continuous grain-mass temperature profiling detects hot-spots early — the number-one indicator of spoilage.
  • Moisture. In-situ grain moisture sensing so operators know exactly when to aerate, turn or dispatch.
  • CO₂ & Gas. Carbon dioxide sensing gives the earliest warning of insect and microbial activity, days before temperature does.
  • Humidity. Interstitial air humidity monitoring prevents condensation, crusting and mould on the surface layer.
  • Wireless Data Logging & Cloud. Battery-powered wireless nodes stream data to a secure cloud dashboard with alerts by SMS and email — accessible from anywhere.

Why monitoring pays for itself

  • Detect spoilage 5–14 days earlier than manual inspection
  • Reduce shrinkage, dry-matter loss and rejected consignments
  • Cut aeration energy cost with data-driven fan control
  • Audit-ready records for buyers, insurers and regulators
  • Remote visibility across multiple silos, sites and stores

Grain Drying

Bring grain safely to storage moisture

Drying is the controlled removal of moisture from freshly harvested grain so it can be stored without spoilage, aflatoxin or germination loss. Engineered dryers replace unreliable sun-drying and unlock consistent, food-safe quality at every scale.

Kolman Bubble Dryers

Inflatable low-cost bubble dryers that use solar-heated air to dry grain gently at farm or aggregation level.

Solar Grain Dryers

Solar-assisted dryers that bring maize, rice, coffee and pulses to safe storage moisture without fossil fuel.

Mechanical Dryers

Continuous-flow and batch dryers sized for cooperatives, millers and commercial farms handling large tonnages.

Post-Harvest Engineering

Turnkey design of drying, cleaning, conveying and handling lines — from receiving pit to finished storage.

Why engineered drying matters

  • Bring grain from 18–25% moisture down to safe 12–13.5% for storage
  • Prevent aflatoxin and mould contamination — critical for food safety
  • Preserve germination, colour, weight and market grade
  • Enable harvesting on schedule instead of waiting on the sun
  • Solar-first options cut drying energy cost by 60–90%

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a hermetic grain storage bag?+

Hermetic bags create an oxygen-limited environment that stops insect activity and preserves grain quality without chemicals — ideal for smallholder and commercial storage.

Which moisture meter is right for me?+

For field use we recommend Wile, Draminski or SuperPoint; for warehouses and labs Pfeuffer HE50, Agromatic or SuperPro deliver reference-grade accuracy.

Do you install automated grain monitoring systems?+

Yes — we design and install temperature, moisture, CO₂ and humidity monitoring with wireless data logging and cloud dashboards for silos and warehouses.

What moisture level is safe for storing maize?+

Maize should be dried to 13.5% moisture or lower for safe long-term storage. Our dryers and moisture meters help you hit that target consistently.
